Our 1st and 2nd graders are working hard on their mini-musical, HATS! Even when the power went out, they were hard at work practicing and memorizing lyrics.
Please mark your calendar for their performance later this school year!

February Music News

Here's a peek into what's going on in the music room this month!

PreK- Students have been singing simple songs related to the season. We were introduced to Handbells  in addition to playing various percussion instruments. Music movement scarves have been fun with Valentine's Day songs.

Kindergarten- In addition to singing simple songs related to the season, we are reading and creating our own rhythms (using quarter-, half-, and whole notes), using various pitched and non-pitched instruments. After handbells we will move on to boom whackers!

1st Grade-  Sing songs related to the season. Reading rhythms and assigning pitches to rhythms
(using quarter-, half-, and whole notes, paired eighth notes, and quarter rest) to play on pitched percussion instruments. Experience dotted quarter notes.

2nd Grade- Practicing good recorder playing technique: Left hand on top; always use slow, warm (fog the window) air; leaks cause squeaks (so use the padded part of your finger to cover holes); remember to separate the notes using "du" (tonguing). Focus on the pitches BAG in stepwise motion with small skips.

3rd Grade- Consistently use good recorder technique. Review, practice, and begin testing on Recorder Karate songs #1-4 (song must be mastered to earn a belt). Focus on difficult fingers using large leaps within the song.

4th Grade- Progressing to master good recorder technique. Play the C Major Scale on Recorder. Review Recorder Karate songs #1-4, and begin testing on songs #5-9 (songs must be mastered to earn a belt).

5th Grade- Students are working on their composition project, which must include either a xylophone or keyboard instrument, with optional percussion. First students brain storm, collaborate with a partner (if desired), and then write a draft. A final copy of their music is hand written on staff paper and will be performed for the rest of the class after completion.

6th Grade- Students did a composer project, researching a composer to share with their classmates. They shared a 30 second clip of a piece by their composer, as well as some basic facts. They are about to begin a journey on Piano Maestro, which introduces us to the use of both hands separately on piano before moving on to using both hands at the same time within a song. Students will practice reading music for both the treble and bass clefs.

As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

Blessings,
Mrs. Jessica Anderson
