I nominate Lilly DeMeritt for Student of the Week. Lilly is a French 1 student, and she brings great energy to the classroom. From the start, Lilly has been eager to practice speaking French, both in and outside of class. She often arrives to class using French phrases, describing the weather or greeting her teacher. Lilly approaches the study of a new language with enthusiasm and a strong work ethic, always tackling challenging assignments with a positive attitude. When given a speaking or writing assignment, Lilly demonstrates creativity and commitment to practicing French. She is always eager to help her classmates. I am proud of the progress Lilly is making as a new French learner. Congratulations, Lilly!

My Student of the Week is Dylan Tompkins.  Dylan has been our Office Aide during Period 7 this semester and has been a tremendous amount of help.  He comes in each day with a friendly smile and asks what needs to be done.  He often will go deliver notes before we even ask.  No matter the task, Dylan does it quickly, efficiently and without complaint!  Thank you Dylan for all  of your help this semester!

Congratulations to MCHS Junior Josh Mandich who represented our school at the 2017 All-State Music Festival in Anchorage. Josh was one of five alto saxophone players selected for the All-State Band. Usually 30 students audition for this section, so it is very competitive. Over 800 students from 51 schools throughout Alaska audition with 345 selected for orchestra, band, and two choirs. The students rehearse for three days culminating with a concert at West Anchorage High School. Josh is passionate about music and plays with the Monroe Band and the Lathrop Jazz Band.

Student of the Week-ROBERT BOND

I have selected Robert Bond for Student of the Week.

Nuestro estudiante de la semana es Robert Bond.  This is Robert’s first year taking a formal Spanish class and he is doing an amazing job!  As a student of Spanish II, Robert has had to put in extra work learning the material he missed in Spanish I.  However, you would never know it.  Robert is very hard working and has a positive attitude.  This is demonstrated in his willingness to work through challenging assignments.  As his class learned Spanish Prayers for our schools’ Rosary this past October, Robert shared a prayer he had memorized in Latin. I look forward to seeing more accomplishments from him and I’m pleased to nominate Robert Bond as student of the week.  ¡Felicidades Robert!

Student of the Week-MORGAN ADAMS

Do you hear that?  Of course you don’t.  Since this is written, how could you hear anything?  Even if it weren’t written, you still wouldn't hear anything.  That thing that you don’t hear is not the sound of silence, it is the sound of Morgan Adams.

What you don’t hear with Morgan speaks volumes about her character.  When you sit in a class with her, you don’t hear her complain about the readings, the homework, or the teacher.  You won’t hear her spreading gossip about her classmates, or complaining about her team.  You won’t hear her talking about her accomplishments, her grades, or her notes, or the scholarships she receives.

If you look closely, however, you will see meticulous notes, organized, retyped, with important words and arcane symbols — she is in calculus, after all — highlighted.  You will see an avid reader, who dives deeply into the series she reads.  You will see a student who exemplifies several of the pillars.  She is open to growth, always putting herself to a new challenge.  Her grades and curiosity attest to her intellectual competence.  The time she quietly donates to her class, without seeking acclaim, attests to her loving nature — if not the dedication she gives to the kindergarten.  Her commitment to social justice is shown threw the hours that she volunteers for school and for the community.

While her character may at times seem … supernatural, her silence really isn’t.  If you listen closely, you will hear the sound of constant mirth, an outpouring of laughter because of jokes that she hears because … well, because she is so quiet.  Sometimes, observation is the greatest entertainment.

These are the reasons Mr. Riggs has chosen Morgan Adams to be his student of the week.
