Students of the week-Alex Hanna and Dylan Tompkins

12/9/2016

Comments

I have chosen Dylan Tompkins and Alex Hanna as my students of the week this week.  For both of these young men, math is not a subject that comes easily.  In the past, they have struggled, gotten frustrated, and sometimes given up.  However, I feel that both of them have turned a corner this year, and I am very proud of them for that.  They both realized this year that they would need to work hard to be successful and both have put in the time and energy needed to do just that.

Dylan has taken the time to come in and ask for help when needed.  He is very attentive in class, takes good notes, and asks questions when he needs clarification.  Alex is also very attentive in class, has done a great job of making use of his class time to get his work done, and has turned in almost every assignment before it is due.  As a result, they are both more confident in their abilities and not afraid to volunteer answers or ask for help if they need it.  They are prime examples of what can be accomplished with effort and hard work, and I am glad to be a part of helping them realize their goals.  Dylan and Alex, take pride in what you have accomplished this year and keep putting your best foot forward.  Congratulations to both of you!

HIPOW surpassed goal of $600,000

12/8/2016

Comments

Thank you to everyone who came out in support of the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks at the 47th annual HIPOW event. We auctioned everything from cars and a snowmachine to bikes, dinners with local celebrities, crime buster birthday parties and furniture. Our volunteers deserve a big pat on the back. They logged hundreds of hours from set up to break down.

HIPOW raised about $625,000 to support the schools. About a third of that total was raised during Saturday’s Fund-the-Vision.

A survey sent out after the event produced interesting results. The most popular topic was online bidding. We’re not happy to see the negative comments, but plan to have more bidding buddies next year to assist those having trouble with electronic bidding.
  • “Great theme this year. Loved the live music on Saturday night, really helped set the mood of “fun.” Great assortment of items to bid on this year as well.”
  • “I like the mobile bidding. I can’t stay the whole time and with mobile bidding I am able to keep bidding on items even after I leave.”
  • “I don’t like the online bidding process. I liked the old fashioned way better.”
Good news for those who prefer the old fashioned way: paper bidding will be available at our annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on March 17, 2017.
