Coach O is a cheerleader for our families both on and off of the court. We’re thrilled he was voted 3A Coach of the Year by his peers. Here’s some background on the big (tall) guy:
Frank Ostanik coached both the Monroe boys and girls basketball teams this year. The boys finished the season 28-0 and went to the state tournament in Anchorage. The team came in 2nd. A huge thank you to all of you who sponsored players (see below). The girls team finished first in the conference in regular season play. Coach O has been coaching basketball since 1993 and here at Monroe since 2008. He’s coached in rural Alaska villages and at the University of Alaska, where he was an NCAA Division II assistant and head coach. He’s a good writer (see the Full Curl), holds his team to high academic standards and is an all around likeable guy. Here are some fun email excerpts that highlight these traits. Dear Staff: “You are welcome to allow hockey players to wear their gloves in your class. However, at no point, should you allow a student to say they cannot take them off. Hockey gloves are not an excuse to not do work or take notes. A player with gloves should not be having someone else take notes for them. Also, if you would like to have the student remove the gloves from the room all together, you are welcome to do so.” At the end of an email outlining upcoming team travel “... I encourage you to let me know if a basketball player, hockey player or cheerleader is approaching class with apathy. I see all basketball players daily and our hockey coach will certainly deal with students who are not turning in work.” In addition to coaching and overseeing our athletic program at CSF, Coach O runs basketball camps over school breaks and in the summer. He’s a busy guy, but there’s always time for a friendly “hello.” State Tournament Basketball Player Sponsors - Thank You!
