Makayla Barnes

It is hard to overstate the meaningful contributions that Makayla makes to our Science 8 class and its community of learners. As Makayla’s physical sciences teacher, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Makayla make profound contributions both within and outside of the classroom.

Makayla is a perceptive, sharp, quick individual with a high aptitude for math and science, which she informs via a nuanced and sophisticated understanding of the empiric process and scientific inquiry. She is driven to understand how things work, whether it’s the microcosm of the atomic nucleus or the forces that hold our universe together, and everything in between. Makayla’s recent project in class was especially impressive, culminating in a fascinating lecture on the Noble Gas, neon, and fun activities that got everyone thinking and talking.

Makayla’s personal strengths are as impressive as her intellectual accomplishments. She’s an active, outgoing presence in Science 8 class with a delightful wit and great sense of humor. Makayla’s the perfect person to get a group project rolling, but she also knows how to support her peers to take the lead.  Her uncommon kindness, cheerful nature and requests for feedback means she’s always learning and growing academically, an impressive strength of character that will continue to serve Makayla and those fortunate enough to make her acquaintance. Makayla is just the kind of driven, engaging, and curious student that helps make Period 6 a lively environment and safe place to take intellectual risks.

Makayla consistently demonstrates excellence in all that she puts her mind to, and never ceases to impress by way of academic efforts that consistently go above and beyond requirements and exceed expectations. Makayla’s endless curiosity and distinguished mind, combined with her sweetness of spirit and willingness to take risks, convinces me that there will be no limit to her growth and achievements at Monroe, in college, and beyond
