Technology and the CSF iPad Program

Picture
The modern office stretches far beyond brick and mortar walls; it stretches around the world. In today's society, cell phones and tablets are ubiquitous. Nearly every student has one or both and almost all workplaces require employees to use them. When students arrive at college, they will be surrounded by technology. They will also be expected to use technology effectively. In fact, some colleges require digital portfolios and digital presentations before a student is even accepted to the school.

We strive to teach our students how how to use technology responsibly and effectively. How does one navigate the countless apps designed to entertain? How can we expect students to manage their time when faced with so many distractions? It is our belief that being exposed to these devices in a controlled environment like our school gives our students a competitive advantage. Parents and teachers both can guide students now before they head off to college or enter the workplace where the cost of distraction is much higher.

The Catholic Schools of Fairbanks 1:1 iPad Program

The Catholic Schools of Fairbanks is a 1:1 iPad institution for grades K-12. This means there is a dedicated iPad for each and every student.

For grades 7-12, students are provided iPads based on their iPad selected during the iPad selection window (or at approved enrollment).

Students use their device throughout the day for various tasks (research, note-taking, reviewing assignments, and even taking quizzes/tests).

Each iPad has a package of Apps personalized for each student based on their year group, and class schedule.

Additionally, faculty members can peruse a selection of apps available that can be assigned to students based on need.

Here is a spreadsheet of apps available to students.

All students iPads require a protective case for their iPads.  For the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, the annual tech fee will include a school case and Logitech Crayon/Apple Pencil (depending on parent selection).  Additionally, parents can choose to further accessorize the device (rugged keyboard and/or trackpad case) to personalize it to their student's needs.

For the upcoming 2021-2022 School year incoming 7th graders and new students will be choosing their new devices.  We are unique in that we allow parents to select the model of iPad according to the individual needs of each student.  Our standard iPad (included with your annual Tech Fee is the 128GB model 8th generation iPad, including a 3-year accidental damage warranty) Contact the school with any questions concerning models and selections.

Why 1:1?

As a Jesuit endorsed institution, the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks is dedicated to helping form young women and men who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice in an age of digital citizenship. To accomplish these goals, we believe devices such as the iPad offer our students many advantages:
  •  Enrichment of the curriculum through the use of digital resources;
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and increase student engagement in a variety of situations;
  • Access to mobile computing power for engaging in the type of high-quality, data-intensive work our society demands;
  • Access to local storage of online books, textbooks and multimedia files so they can carry their studies with them in a variety of engaging formats;
  • Access to social media so that students are conscientious creators of, and not just consumers of, the intellectual conversations of our age;
  • A personalized computing device that ensures equitable access as well as options for personal customization, integration and responsibility.
Administration and staff are eager to support and help in the formation of our students as conscientious digital citizens.  We thank you in advance for your parental support and encourage you to contact the school should you have any questions regarding the Schools iPad 1:1 program.
